WordPress Features Wish List

This page is where we record ideas about what else a great blog can do. It - like everything on this blog - is a work always in the progress of improvement. Think of it as where we think out loud.

If you have already found a way to implement these do feel free to drop comments and links. Solutions will be moved up and linked into the post periodically.

  • Site Search - Lots of options here. Currently researching which are best.
  • Custom Glossary WP plugin: Automatically hyperlink words to a glossary so readers can easily get additional information on any word they are not familiar with and more advanced readers (on that subject - we’re all Newbies at something!) won’t have to read through basics they already know. Potential solution: IMM Glossary WordPress Plug-in. If you have experience with this plug-in, other potential solutions, or input on this subject please do share.
  • Automatic Related Posts: Automatically add Related Posts section at the bottom of each post. Related Post function usually uses keywords to decide which posts are related. Ideally a blogger would need a way to add/delete posts to refine the results. See this Problogger example of Related Posts function. I’ve noticed Darren does not use this on all posts and suspect there is a reason. More research needed.
  • Encouraging comments: Potential solutions are dofollow and commentluv. Further research see Andy Beard’s Ultimate List of Nofollow and Dofollow Plugins.
  • Mouseover Explanations: Information that appears when anything on the page is pointed at that explains what it is for. The perfect solution would have default text describing that function AND be editable by bloggers who want to customize them. This function would provide a simple definition and reduce the need for additional pages such as the What is RSS link at ProBlogger. Implementation will greatly ease the learning curve for blog readers and even fellow bloggers.
  • Tabbed Themes and plug-ins: Many of the most usable Web sites take advantage of tabs to allow more options to be visible without cluttering the page.
