Most of the time when this happens the site owner has no idea it has occurred until after their traffic has dropped like a rock. People who redesign Web sites really should know better – but many don’t.

Hi Biagio,

Yes, you can absolutely do some editing. If the content is on a blog it will get re-indexed usually very quickly and increase how many can find you.

Use the tips from the post about using keywords to tweak old posts. If you didn’t use your keyword phrases in the titles and as the URL of the pages you can get stronger positions by writing new content that uses the phrase in the URL.

Once you have the content, the strongest factor that determines whether that content appears on page one of Google is quality incoming links from related content. (All links from decent sites are good, but some are much better than good!)

If there are specific phrases you know you want to rank for check with me – I bet we can push you to page one (as long as they are targeted enough – we can’t get there for “movies” or “music videos”).

As always, great post. Question: what about re-working old content to make better use of the keyword phrases you are targeting? We have a lot of early posts (100+) that are indexed, but weren’t really written with SEO in mind. Would it be wise to employ your tips in re-writing many of them (without changing the URL) but updating the posts and post titles?
