There have been reports so far from two bloggers involving three blogs that after upgrading to WordPress 3.3.1 the checkbox for the GrowMap anti-spambot plugin (G.A.S.P.) goes missing.

Blogs affected so far are all using the FREE version –
not CommentLuv Premium.

Bloggers using CommentLuv Premium who have upgraded to WordPress 3.3.1 including Donna Fontenot’s (@DonnaFontenot) ebusiness coaching blog and Ron Cripps’ (@AffiliateXFiles) MakeItYourRing do NOT have the problem.

Kristi Hines (@Kikolani) – a wonderful person who supports other bloggers and wrote the Ultimate Blog Post Promotion Guide, dropped everything and upgraded a blog using the free version to 3.3.1 to test for issues.

The GASP checkbox was still visible, so the good news is there
is not a major problem with upgrading to WordPress 3.3.1.

The problem was first reported by John Rocheleau on his popular self help thoughts Zen Moments blog. He believes that “for some reason the plugin is not recognizing the presence of java even though the Java works fine on any other site and in Java tests online at sun java, etc.”.

John Lefler also had this issue just after upgrading to WP 3.3.1 on his existing Help for Tinnitus blog and his new Chameleon Lovers blog. Problems on both blogs have now been resolved and I have received no new reports of issues.

WHAT CAUSED THE CHECKBOX TO REAPPEAR?

When John @ZenMoments saw that Andy had uploaded a new version of the plugin, he upgraded to GASP 1.1.1 and his problem was resolved.

GASP MISSING CHECKBOX DIAGNOSIS:

The first thing to ask yourself is have you made any recent changes? Did you upgrade WordPress, change or upgrade your Theme, install any new plugins or update any existing plugins?

Any recent changes are the most likely cause of a new issue.

What to check if your GrowMap antispambot checkbox is not visible:

1. Are you logged out of your blog? You can only see it if you are.
2. Clear your browser cache and cookies and retry.
3. Try different browsers. Sometimes problems occur in one browser and not others: fails in Chrome but not in FireFox or vice versa.
4. Ask others to check your blog from different PCs, using different browsers, and using different Internet connections. (You want to eliminate anything your tests have in common to diagnose where the real issue lies.
5. Try deactivating and reactivating your GASP plugin.
6. If there is a new version of GASP upgrade to it.
7. If all else fails, you can delete GASP and then reinstall it – but you may want to check for plugin conflicts first.

PLUGIN CONFLICTS

The most common conflict issues with plugins involve caching plugins and plugins that use javascript (such as the Ajax edit comments plugin and GASP). Any time you upgrade WordPress or any plugin it could potentially affect other plugins.

1. Clear wp super cache caches after every upgrade.
2. Try disabling plugins starting with those most likely to cause a conflict.

Caching plugins are the place to start. They can be challenging to configure properly so if you make any changes FIRST RECORD EXISTING SETTINGS.

You may want to get assistance with configuring from someone who prefers the Caching plugin you have installed or even temporarily leave it turned off. Sometimes caching plugins cause more issues than the resolve.

WHEN DIAGNOSING ANY TECHNICAL ISSUE:

1. Record existing settings, status of plugins, and if you are going to do updates get a fresh backup.
2. KEEP A CHANGE LOG – all that means is write down each thing you do in sequence so you can reverse them if necessary – and to share with anyone you end up needing to assist you. THIS IS CRITICAL!
3. Do NOT start changing everything all at once - You don’t want to complicate resolution by creating multiple issues where you originally only had one! If something does not fix the issue, change that back and THEN change something else.

YES, you MIGHT need to change more than one thing, but multiple issues are very difficult to diagnose so don’t create them where they do not already exist.

I encourage bloggers to connect with other bloggers in their location
and/or niche so they have a built-in support network for both sharing
your content and testing and resolving any technical issues you have.

This is how I decide where to spend my time – the more generous the blogger the more I promote what they’re doing on Twitter, StumbleUpon, Google+, Facebook, FriendFeed and now on JustRetweet, too.

The higher on the list a blogger is (and that is totally up to them)
the more likely they will be invited to specific projects that come
with benefits like our JustRetweet collaboration and our
Conversion Doubler landing page optimization program.

that I recommend to other bloggers,
and who I link to in my posts here and elsewhere.

One of the benefits of knowing really sharp bloggers is they notice and warn other bloggers right away of changes that are detrimental to their blogs.

When business coach and online project management consultant Vernessa Taylor noticed that the subscribe to comments function Ileane usually used was replaced by an email from WordPress.com, they discussed the issue and realized the latest update of JetPack Stats – a WordPress provided stats plugin – was the culprit.

Vernessa feels the same way I do about what WordPress, Themes and plugins should and should NOT do and high on my list is the belief that they should NOT change how my blogs work without notifying me FIRST and giving me the option to refuse.

Automattic made JetPack 1.2.1 override the existing Subscribe to Comments plugin most serious bloggers we know use and hijacked control over where they subscribe. Vernessa’s solution was to delete JetPack altogether.

Every serious Internet marketer knows the money is in your list –
So taking away control of your list is a VERY SERIOUS matter!

Content Strategist Doc Sheldon reads Vernessa’s blog, so he published a heads-up post of his own about the Automattic Jetpack Plugin called “You Crossed the Line! You’re FIRED!” where he suggests switching to JetPack Lite as an alternative remedy.

This is NOT the first time Automattic has decided to make changes
to WordPress stats without giving bloggers any heads up in advance.

Not acceptable, Automattic. Bloggers need to be thinking about what we will do if even more egregious issues arise. If anyone has the skills (or knows someone who does) to go back to the last WordPress version before Automattic took control of it and bring an independent version since that fork up to speed do let us know?

Has anyone switched to the Google Analytics Alternative Piwik ? I would really love to get off all things “Borg” and use independent, more trustworthy alternatives.

Piwik – if you’re listening – I’ve been asking about you for a long time now. I’ve been hoping you’d see I am serious about promoting your solution to our blogging collaborations.

Small Business owners may not have the time to comment themselves because they’re busy running their companies and struggling to survive in this economic downturn.

If we object to businesses commenting in our blogs
and call them spammers
how will they learn from us what we now know?

Where will they get the visibility and traffic they need to create more jobs and pump much needed money into our local communities?

A: They probably won’t. Google is taking away their search traffic and plays games with the cost of their ads – especially during their peak sales periods.

There IS NO OTHER SOURCE of traffic that
converts like organic or paid search.
NONE.

I know because I’ve tested. Local Search Listings can generate traffic that can add up to big traffic, but that takes more time and you need hundreds or thousands of sites to generate 75% of the traffic you get from Google. (See this Local Search Case Study for details.)

Blogging generates traffic but it won’t convert like search. That means you need a lot MORE traffic and for that you need Collaborations of Bloggers familiar with Blog Outreach.

WHAT BLOGGERS CAN DO:

1. Seriously think about being dofollow. If you use CommentLuv you can set the CommentLuv link to dofollow. If you use KeywordLuv or the Keywords function of CommentLuv Premium you can set the keywords in the name field to dofollow. This blog has both fields set to dofollow. If you only want to set one to dofollow the keywords are more important (unless the blogger is using keywords as the title of their posts). While being dofollow does attract link builders who may be spammers, being nofollow does NOT eliminate spam. We fegularly collaborate with and promote only bloggers who choose to be dofollow AND use CommentLuv.
2. Rethink your position on allowing businesses to comment in your blog.
3. Support your local businesses.
4. Create collaborations of local bloggers. Check out what Rohan @365thingstododc is doing with Washington D.C. Influencers
5. Understand Why Your Geographic Location IS a Niche and add a geographic component to your blog that will Position Your Blog Where the Money Is.
6. Use and promote the use of CommentLuv and understand How CommentLuv Grows Businesses and Blogs

I regularly find out bloggers I know have DoFollow CommentLuv KeywordLuv blogs that aren’t on my list AND I get introduced to bloggers that somehow missed being on my radar. Just yesterday Vernessa mentioned Stella Anokams’ Marketing Tips (@stellaanokam on Twitter) and I realized her blog qualifies.

Another possible cause of dropping PageRank – and even worse – potential loss of organic search traffic – is slow load time.

Most WordPress blogs are not loading nearly as quickly as they can and there ARE some great tools out there to assist us in speeding them up.

GTmetrix offers a free WordPress Optimization Guide and free online Page Load speed test that provides comprehensive results.

• NOTE: a page load time of 5.29s still garners an F grade so don’t panic when you run your site!
• Test your home page and some of your posts to identify issues that affect one and not the other.

This screen capture shows most of the first page of results. There are multiple tabs and much more to see so do run your own URLs. It doesn’t cost you anything but your time.

They recommend two very popular WordPress plugins: W3 Total Cache to set an expiration time and speed up browser caching and SmushIt to optimize images. (Many blogs are using images that are way too large and even I should optimize all the images here.)

WARNING: Be aware that caching plugins
are highly likely to conflict with other plugins
and WordPress or Theme upgrades or changes.

We need to identify bloggers who are particularly adept at optimizing caching plugins and make a list of those willing to assist and what they charge to help other bloggers. Any volunteers?

PAGE SPEED TIPS:

• Reduce the Number of Posts you display on your main page to speed up your blog! Go to WP admin under Settings and set how many posts will be displayed on the front page and going to 5 seems to be the best option, but this can vary from theme to theme as well, as some themes are much heavier than others causing slow speeds. Tip from JR whose Internet Marketing Blog is one to definitely be reading.
• JR also tells us that another issue with page speed is plugins like Similar Posts that drag down speed by calling the related posts for each page on the blog and can really affect page load times.
• Make sure your sharing buttons are ONLY on the post and NOT on your main page. They can really slow your blog down. Tip from Kristi Hines of the exceptional Social Media for Businesses Advice blog Kikolani.com. I make it a point to read what Kristi writes everywhere. Bloggers should seriously consider buying her inexpensive Blog Post Promotion Guide.
• I use WP-Optimize to delete post revisions and optimize databases. It is easy to run and hasn’t caused any problems. When I had the caching issue each time I published a new post I found that optimizing just before publishing DID make a difference.
• Ray from Dolphin Hosting recommends we keep an eye on is Google’s new page speed service and says another fairly decent test site that Google recommends is WebPageTest.org.
