Hello gocodes,

PPC Summit is no longer doing the live events but they did a Webinar in 2010 and should be doing more Webinars in 2011. I will definitely be blogging about them here just as soon as the details are released so subscribe to either my blog or their ppc blog and you'll know when.

There are several excellent posts about pay per click in the ppc section of my Best of GrowMap post.

Hi Tim,

Most people use Google Analytics; however, for any business that can afford it I recommend you use independent analytics instead.

Hi Matt,

The perils of ppc is probably why my Golden Days of PPC post stays in the Recently Popular section all the time. Most people have no idea how to protect themselves from all the ways the ppc engines take money from them in exchange for traffic that will NEVER convert.

There are only a handful of ppc experts who really understand all these issues and that is why I recommend this particular seminar. Back when I was doing ppc full time whenever some new way to lose money showed up the person behind that seminar was the first person I called. We gave each other the heads up and compared notes across dozens of accounts to find a way to protect our accounts.

Even though stats show many prefer organic listings I could drive thousands of dollars in new sales using ppc so buyers DO click on them. The advantage of the ppc ad over organic is you can have the ad exactly match the search query and land them on that specific item. Organic listings are not usually that targeted.

Where that is important is online stores that sell hundreds or thousands of products. They can have an add for a specific make, model or type of product and their ad brings the buyer right to the best page for that item.

If you can generate plenty of business without ppc and aren't looking to expand there is no reason to spend money on ads. Free traffic is always great if it converts. I did just see a study that showed ppc converts better than organic - and the reason for that would be getting the potential buyer to the right page instantly.

The search functions on many store sites are poor and won't find the right product on most searches or will return pages of unrelated items. Most Internet users will not try very hard to find an item - usually they search once and then leave - so even if a store has it without ppc their buyers may not find it!

I've seen so many businesses lose their collective shirt on PPC, so I can clearly see a market for this type of service. I'm glad that I do not need PPC, because in my niche the "Sponsored Links" are full of shady operators, and they lack credibility.
Studies have shown that a whopping 40% of white collar Internet users AVOID the sponsored links, choosing only to click on Organic search engine results.
I'm one of those statistics! Since the vast majority of my clientele are white collar (middle class), all the more reason to stay away from PPC.
