It's not that bad if you compare it to China.
Every visa I get I have to register at the police station in the area I live so they know where I stay. They even come around to check.
The government knows a lot about me, but I don't think I have to be afraid of that information getting spread, or getting conned.

But there are some things that just piss me off. Like I bought a prepaid sim card for my phone. They want a copy of my passport. I give them a copy of my passport to make a copy off. But they insisted to make a copy of the original. For a prepaid card! So I left the official phone company and bought a prepaid card at a kiosk (without giving any details).

Hi Ginger,

Have you ever heard the boiling frogs story? Every day we have less privacy and less freedom. I highly recommend becoming familiar with the information on my page about Evil Google.
Wow. Considering the dates on these blogs about privacy , it keeps evolving.
Today's date is Aug. 31, 2011 and the sky still hasn't fallen..'WHEW'... into the hands of Dr. Evil. With some interesting research in communications, constitutions of the global markets make a variety of arbitration possibilities available. Wireless technology is about biological communications and any major players out there are going to run into their share of screenings. So, just take a deep breath get familiar with the Zen of ecology's fast paced innovations and solutions will pop out of the woodwork. :)

Yes, Andy, anything that ends up online is likely to be preserved somewhere - or even many different places - forever or until whatever they are stored on deteriorates and is no longer readable (or the equipment to read it is no longer available).

I've been online for as long as the World Wide Web has been in existence and it always surprises and shocks me when I stumble across some comment that I made online years ago. Everything is recorded somewhere.

Hello Shaun,

Data mining is a simple concept although it can extremely complex in implementation. It is any method used to extract specific information from a database.

The largest danger for individuals is the enormous amount of personal information being compiled by searching across multiple databases. Few realize that their information - even medical records - are widely available.

When services collate information from many sources and then make it available online to the general public, for a fee, or to those with the money there can be serious consequences. For example, I find it unsettling that some white pages sites now list the names and ages of children.

In another blog someone asked whether Google could track users across Web sites. Here is some detail on that:

DoubleClick gets in trouble for wanting to merge user identification with behavior. There was publicity and legal action:

http://www.cdt.org/privacy/000302doubleclick.shtml

http://www.out-law.com/page-2486

Later, Google acquired DoubleClick amid protests by privacy groups. They finally overcame the last obstacle and got EU clearance for the merger:

http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/google-lands-eu-clearance-doubleclick/story.aspx?guid={041C7A8C-FF82-4654-A874-62EF04D53463}

The MarketWatch article says:

"DoubleClick is expected to provide Google with a trove of existing customers, online inventory and technology needed to better track Web users across sites in order to deliver them targeted display advertisements."

and

"Microsoft complained publicly last year that Google's purchase of DoubleClick would result in "sole control over the largest database of user information the world has ever known."

Do you suppose that they won't use the capability provided by their acquisition? Want more details? See these:
