Bloggers and businesses alike may not realize how very important CommentLuv can be to them. By joining the CommentLuv community you can connect with many others interested in the same things you are.
The CommentLuv featured posts you see in blogs that have CommentLuv installed make it easy to see which other commentators (people leaving comments) write about what you are interested in. Clicking on those comments connects you instantly with them.
There are already niches forming within the more than 20,000+ 30,000+ 35,137+ (on Oct 7, 2010) – 38,550+ registered users of CommentLuv (as of March 17, 2011) 41,888 (as of May 15, 2011) and the CommentLuv commuity is growing rapidly.
Whether you have a blog or not it is important that you seek out bloggers who write about subjects near and dear to your heart which for business owners means those related to the products and services you have to offer.
BLOGGERS: Welcome business owners as readers and commentators.
Invite them to share their expertise as guest bloggers.
Their experience and knowledge makes your blog even better!
Remember that they have interests beyond what they do
and interesting things to say on other subjects.
Be tolerant of those new to commenting and Social Networking and guide them in what is appropriate behavior. I am certain we have all made mistakes when we first got online. Never assume they realize what they are doing until we first explain what is expected.
BUSINESSES: Do not spam blogs.
Do not hire SEO companies to spam blogs.
Do not turn your comments into advertisements.
DO contribute to the discussion and share what you know.FOCUS on blogs in your niche
whose readers would be interested in what you offer.
For example, if you sell pole chain saws, do most of your commenting
in home improvement and construction related blogs.
Let CommentLuv default links guide the blog owners and readers who are interested in what you offer to your site. Use the information about default links to register your business and select anchor text that creates beneficial backlinks without detracting from the blog where they appear.
I wrote the information below in reply to a question that Mike Criss, owner of the online printing company PrintingBlue posed in my post about KeywordLuv.
I was prompted to write this post to share what I told him with all my readers including those who rarely read the comments. I highly recommend you read comments here because I share as much in them as I post!
I will also answer any questions you leave or you can use my contact form to reach me via email. I would be happy to answer any specific questions you have.
To benefit from using CommentLuv and KeywordLuv you do not have
to have them installed but I DO recommend installing at least CommentLuv.
I strongly encourage all bloggers to install at least CommentLuv and all bloggers and business owners to register to use CommentLuv.
Not long I ago I would have encouraged all bloggers to install both but there is breaking news about new features in CommentLuv that I’ll include in this reply that may make KeywordLuv unnecessary.
My KeywordLuv post explains how you as a business owner can use blogs that have KeywordLuv installed to create dofollow backlinks that will allow your site to be found in the search engines. Now you can get the same benefits by being a valuable contributor in CommentLuv blogs.
Here are some additional resources that will help you do that best:
- First you need to know what keyword phrases are important to you. I explain how to do that in my post about using anchor text links to build traffic and get found in the search engines.
- When you create content you need to consistently use those keyword phrases. I explain where and how to use them in my post about selecting keywords first and then writing copy.
- Since this post was written CommentLuv has added new features that allow bloggers and businesses to register default links that automatically create anchor text without having keywords in the name field (which many don’t really like). Read how to use CommentLuv default links for anchor text.
- If you’re not familiar with CommentLuv also read How CommentLuv works.
- For those who are concerned about PageRank see CommentLuv Does Not Seem to Leak Link Juice.
I strongly recommend all businesses and bloggers who want to survive the economic downturn that is NOT going to recover and IS going to get worse learn why it is inevitable that the economy is going to continue to slide (both in the U.S. and globally).
The solution is to support small businesses – both the ones online and in their local communities.
There is more about why supporting the marketing efforts of small and online businesses is critical in my post about Word of Mouth. Find out what is causing worldwide economic collapse and how you can best avoid being a victim of it by reading these last two links.
Who do you know that could use this information? Make a difference today by emailing them the link to this post. Write it down and hand it to them. If you’re ambitious print it out and give it to the businesses you use. Use the TwitThis button and add @usernames to make sure others see your Tweet.

What can I say, I have installed CommentLuv a very long time ago and have never let it go since. The benefits outweigh, well errrr, no risks actually.. I only have seen benefits as I’ve seen my community, relationships and comments grow. Those who use it know the benefits of using CommentLuv, those who don’t are missing a lot. You can take my word for it..

I think these plugins can be really great if used correctly but if not they can really detriment your site. When I installed them on one of my blogs, comments kept coming and coming. You will really have to go through and filter out comments more often as well as take a closer look at the links people are submitting, to make sure they are not going anywhere “naughty”. However, the ultimate result of creating a sense of community with active discussions is very rewarding. Not to mention that your posts will get a lot of extra relevant content which is good for your rankings.
I have been using the ComLuv plugin for WordPress on my site and love it, no pun intended. You may think at first glance that it is a comment plugin to replace another plugin you already use but that is not the case. CommentLuv, as it is called, does not displace your current commenting system. It merely enhances it.

This is absolutely fantastic.
I love that you touched on the morality and ethics of using CommentLuv. Just like any link building effort, no one should be spamming these great tools just to drive traffic.
Like you said, CL is best to give the people the knowledge of your latest post but not to spam them to pieces.
The funny thing about Keyword Luv, as much as I like it, I can’t bring myself to use keywords. I think building my personal brand is very important which is why I generally use Murlu or Murray Lunn (my name).
It’s all very subjective depending on the blog. It’s definitely helpful for those which do have a business.

Welcome Murray,
Have you read my posts about keywordluv and the importance of determining what your most important keywords are when building traffic to your blog or business?
Once you read those you may reconsider using keywords in the name field in blogs friendly to you. Do be aware that some bloggers are very anti-keywords and anti-business even though they are DoFollow or even have KeywordLuv installed and not all blogs that use CommentLuv or KeywordLuv are dofollow.
You do need to be aware of the issue of sincere commentators being reported to Akismet as spammers. That is a serious issue being discussed at length in the post I’ll feature in CommentLuv.

Excellent point and I’m not opposed to any of it (reading the posts now hehe).
I think I may just be modest in terms of my own blog (Murlu) however that’s not to say I do use a bit of keywords for one of my other ones.
On the business side of things, I believe it’s a great way for small businesses to grow their online brand especially when they’re up against juggernauts that have millions to put toward advertising.
That’s one of the great benefits of being small, you can start from the ground floor and go from there. Heck, you may build a better brand and community overall because you’re starting with your audience, integrating yourself rather than trying to convince people.
I think what it boils down for me is that I’m not trying to rank well for keywords (gasp!) because I want to see how organic my blog can grow through community involvement.
As you mentioned, it’s dependent on the blog you’re commenting on. Many people don’t like too spammy of a keyword being included while others are quite open.
There’s a perfect balance in my opinion. Allow genuine bloggers to place keywords but hold back on sites that are trying to scam people.

Do go out commenting when you get it installed – that is the very best way to attract new readers and commentators – especially if you comment in blogs related to your own.
If you already rank in the search engines for your name do read about using KeywordLuv to increase traffic to your site from search engines. That information is in the post I’ll put in CommentLuv in this reply.

Hi AJ,
Yes I do. There will eventually be two separate types of bloggers: those who dofollow and encourage keywords to be used for link building and those who do not. Which you prefer will determine which bloggers you will interact with regularly.
If loss of PR was a serious issue how could my posts that have hundreds of dofollow comments in them still be PR3 and PR4?

UPDATE: The last PageRank update over the weekend DID penalize this blog for the large number of dofollow links I allow to businesses. While I will write a commenting policy asking commentators to write more substantive comments I will NOT stop using DoFollow, CommentLuv or KeywordLuv.
Pagerank is one number that impresses some; it is NOT more important to supporting small local and online businesses or bloggers who make the effort to read and comment in this blog.

I had experimented with commentluv in the past and it was working fine. It for sure increases the comments and also reward commenters equally. However, when the comment count grows dramatically, it’s a pain for the blogger as well as commenters – due to moderation efforts and low link strength respectively.
I had to remove commentluv for a different reason though
It messed up with my comment area somehow and nothing would be visible. After some debugging I dropped it. I plan to bring back commentluv and keywordluv soon.

I adore CommentLuv. I use it on all of my blogs and encourage others to do the same. It’s simply one of the best win/wins I’ve seen in a along time. I have not noticed an increase in Spam and I do notice an increase in visitor and most especially networking amongst other bloggers. I really like that aspect. Not only do we visit each other’s blogs, we often email quite a bit.
However, I still manually remove the “nofollow” from my sites comment coding to be sure my blogs are completely DoFollow. I’m not sure it’s necessary, but I’m a little OCD that way.
)) I also use the SEO plugin for Firefox which tells me if others sites are truly DoFollow and that helps tons.

I did carry out a little experiment of my own on commentLuv recently. While I found it attracted one or two extra visitors and comments, the results were not significant in anyway. The other thing I observed was that unlike what I have heard from some other bloggers, there was no surge in spam comments on my blog. Overall, I decided to continue using it as it does no harm to my blog.

Hi Jay,
You have to have commentators to get the ball rolling. Go out to other CommentLuv blogs and comment in them. Select your most relevant latest post to show them.
Visiting blogs that already have traffic raises your visibility and your comments and featured post attracts new readers back to your blog.
The spammers have lists they sell and share among each other and eventually all dofollow and CommentLuv enabled blogs will end up on them. Dealing with spam is the price we pay for being more visible.
I noticed you did not use any keywords to let those who see your comment here know what is important to you and build valuable backlinks. See the post I’ve featured in CommentLuv in this reply for how to do that.
.-= growmap´s featured blog ..DoFollow CommentLuv KeywordLuv Community =-.
You need to be careful though. I’ve come across loads of sites that have comment luv enabled but when you view the source code, you find the comments have all been nofollowed.
I’ve now got in the habit of viewing the source code everytime I post, just to check (apart from sites where I just feel like commenting regardless).
You might want to do a piece on how to view source code, and what to look for (with screenshots). I’m sure it will be useful to many people.

Hello teatree,
We can never assume that just because a blog uses CommentLuv that it is dofollow – many are not including those that use Lucia’s and other plugins that require you to leave a minimum number of comments before just the NAME field and NOT the CommentLuv field convert to dofollow.
Some bloggers who use CommentLuv will even report you as a spammer so do be cautious about which blogs you comment in. It is sad but true that not everyone welcomes new commentators.

Looks like the ‘default link’ is going to kill KeywordLuv in some time. What I always liked about commentluv is the fact that I can ‘respond to a post on my blog’ and then respond in comment.. This way the person knows I have also written something on my blog about the same topic, I often created RSS feeds for my site to allow commentluv to pickup latest articles but now it seems registering there would make it even better.
