You can get free online advertising from some companies if you buy a small, inexpensive ad in their free printed editions. Pick up any free printed classifieds you see in your area. They are usually found in grocery stores, restaurants, and other local businesses.
Some you may wish to consider are:
- Thrifty Nickel Want Ads aka American Classifieds aka TNOL.com
- PennySaver Classifieds
- Backpage – Suggested by Matt the Wedding DJ from Sacramento Weddings
Some print classifieds place only classified ads on their Web sites (not display ads). If you buy a small ad in one print edition that ad can be searched for and seen by anyone online. This can make it an inexpensive way to get free online advertising and sometimes links too. Offerings vary so be sure to read the fine print.
We are seeking out research others have done on the best classified sites and especially lists of classified ads by location. If you have any you would like included just leave us a comment or contact us at Twitter.

Backpage is actually a free classified operated by Sacramento News & Review (SN&R), but I’m not sure if the links are do-follow any more.

@Dennis I suspected it wasn’t commonly known as I have never seen anyone else recommend it. I use it all the time to find hay in a larger area and suggest it to local businesses.
@Matt I’ll have to check that one out. No matter how much you research a subject there is always another resource out there you haven’t found yet.

@Mark I have always found they worked best in the areas where I wish to advertise and also to locate products and services.

I’m all over this. It sounds like a great deal, and I’ve wanted to move into print for a while now. Thanks for the heads up!

Glad to be of assistance. These have been around long enough that many of their readers are already searching wider areas than the print versions reach. They have also gotten better at plugging their Web site in their issues so more and more of their readers will be going online.
Have you listed your business in Local Search yet? I know it doesn’t seem necessary but those high traffic sites like Yahoo! Local and Google Maps provide quality incoming links and you will get some business from Internet users who find you in the listings near them.
It also makes you easier to find if someone remembers you’re in Raleigh but can’t recall your URL or business name. Another good reason to get your listings in there is that they many of those sites have reviews and you WANT those reviews. See our post on The Importance of Online Reviews for why.
Click on the Local Search and Special Offer tabs in the header for additional details and for a form that makes it easier to collect all the information you’ll need.

I always check to see if there’s a link in with the deal if I consider buying print ads paired with an online offer, otherwise i’m not usually interested.
